I see an upgrade path from R2 essentials to essentials on Microsoft. The only way i think you could do this would be to install Server Ess as a virtual machine on robust desktop, migrate the existing domain to the VM then load Server Hyper-V on the old server and then move the Server Ess from the robust desktop. This solution may cost more in time then just getting new er hardware. Also has more chances for errors.
Also I recommend going to server Ess if you are taking this time unless there are features in Server Ess you want that are not in Essentials. Mariette is a great resource if you have any questions on the guide.
